Applying for computing time

Scientists from RWTH Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich can apply for regular computing time projects on JURECA, CLAIX and on the D-Wave Advantage™ System JUPSI twice a year in January/February and July/August. Successful projects start May 1st and November 1st and have a duration of one year (project extensions are possible).

The application process for the next computing time period starts on January 16, 2023 and ends on February 13, 2023, 5pm CET (strict deadline).

The current call for computing time in the JARA Partition is also the last call. The JARA Partition will end with the next computing time period on April 30, 2024. In the future, we recommend that you apply for computing time via NHR or use the access ways to the HPC infrastructure in Jülich. Please find the relevant links and further information in this information letter.

Please note the following information

Computing time on CLAIX:

Within a JARA project, researchers can request between 2.4 and 8 million core hours on the CLAIX system. For smaller or larger needs on CLAIX please refer to the information provided here.

Computing time on JURECA:

The JURECA‐DC (data centric) Module is available mainly for scientists from the FZJ campus. However, researchers of the RWTH Aachen university can also apply for resources on JURECA‐DC CPUs and GPUs within JARA, if they benefit from the Modular Supercomputing Architecture (MSA) of the system. Requirements for this are:

  • A need for both resources is required, i.e., JURECA‐DC CPUs together with JURECA‐DC GPUs.
  • Either heterogeneous applications have to be used, where, for example, different parts of a simulation code use different physical models and run therefore on different resources. Or heterogeneous work‐flows are deployed, for example, to model phenomena on different length scales or to perform chains of simulation and data analysis parts, where the different parts run on different resources.
  • The modularity of applications and/or work‐flows must be clearly described in the application form.
