Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass” hosts its third International Conference and receives the Klimasiegel of North Rhine-Westphalian

Over 200 scientists from Germany and abroad, more than 30 lectures, 8 plenaries and over 30 scientific posters: these are the key data concerning this year’s International Conference of the RWTH Aachen Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass (TMFB)”, that took place from June 23rd to 25th 2015 in the Eurogress in Aachen. The Cluster of Excellence TMFB, in whose research activities many JARA Energy Scientists are actively involved, established its interdisciplinary conference in 2013. Since then the conference, which incorporates TMFB’s own research topics regarding the synthesis, production and combustion of modern biofuels, has grown steadily. This year, more than 200 participants from all over the world contributed to a scientific exchange that exceeded the boundaries of the involved sciences – one of the primary concerns and unique features of the Cluster of Excellence.

The cluster’s main characteristic is its interdisciplinary approach. “Our research cluster consists of scientists from many different disciplines. The collaboration of chemistry, biology, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and related research fields leads to many new ideas, which we want to realize together”, says Professor Stefan Pischinger, head of the cluster and Member of JARA-ENERGY. Because of its sustainable and progressive research, the Cluster of Excellence was honored by the KlimaExpo.NRW this year. The institutions rewarded by the KlimaExpo.NRW contribute significantly to innovation in the field of climate protection. The symbolic award of the Klimasiegel from a representative of the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research was one of the conference’s main highlights.

The Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass” is in the second funding phase in the context of the Excellence Initiative. Since 2007 scientists of the RTWH Aachen University and different partner institutions contribute to the development of a holistic production process of optimized biofuels that, at the same time, are not in competition with food production. Nearly half of the 30 involved professors are members of JARA Energy.
