Measuring air quality and asphalt temperatures more reliably
The ‘SchwarmMessRad’ research project focuses on mobile measuring units on cargo bikes
How hot does the asphalt get on summer days? How high are ozone and particulate matter levels really in the city? Answers to these questions are being provided by the SchwarmMessRad research project, led by Professor Sven Klinkel, a scientist at JARA-CSD and Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. Mobile sensors mounted on cargo bikes are used to create a high-resolution map of air quality and asphalt temperatures — forming the basis for innovative mobility concepts and heat-resilient cities. By involving citizens directly, science becomes part of everyday urban life.
