JARA-CSD member Prof. Wil van der Aalst brings Germany's most successful start-up to Aachen

A new Celonis Engineering and Innovation Lab will enhance the portfolio of JARA partner RWTH Aachen University in the future. The aim is to create synergy effects in the field of research and development as well as in the training of future specialists for process mining and execution management. The new lab will focus on the further development of future-oriented process mining functionalities such as process recognition, predictive analytics, data-driven simulation and machine learning.

Process mining is digital process management in which company workflows can be analyzed by using digital data from IT systems. The results show potential for improvement. One of the pioneers in the field of process mining is JARA-CSD member Prof. Wil van der Aalst. He has been working on the optimization of workflows in companies since the early nineties. His approach, in which a company's data forms the basis for optimization and for developing solutions, became the foundation for the start-up Celonis in 2011. The company's three founders developed algorithms and finally a software that offers execution management beyond business process analysis.

Within a short time, the start-up Celonis developed into one of the most successful young companies in Germany. After only ten years, Celonis already employs 2,500 people worldwide and has 20 offices serving renowned customers. The company's headquarters are located in Munich and New York. Celonis cooperates with universities all over the world, but in Aachen, the first innovation lab is being established. The starting signal was given at the end of May with a ceremony. In autumn of this year, the offices in the new building on Campus Melaten will follow.
