A further step towards decoding the sense of smell

How does our sense of smell shape our perception of the world? An international research team, led by JARA-BRAIN scientist Prof. Marc Spehr, has now decoded key neuronal mechanisms behind odour perception. They discovered that individual nerve cells in the brain respond not only to smells but also to images and words. These findings could pave the way for the development of olfactory aids in the future—much like glasses or hearing aids for vision and hearing.
