ENTRANCE Focus Trip to Beijing: Science, Diplomacy, and Cultural Experiences
In September, the ENTRANCE project team traveled to Beijing with a delegation of German universities and institutions. The trip provided exciting insights into German-Chinese cooperation, visits to leading research institutions, and inspiring discussions.
The focus trip began with engaging discussions as the full program kicked off immediately upon arrival—8,800 kilometers later! Jet lag and fatigue were soon forgotten as the celebrations for German Unity Day commenced at the German Embassy in Beijing. Since October 3 is a public holiday in China, the event was held early on September 19, offering our delegation a unique chance to exchange ideas in a relaxed setting.
In addition to a second visit to the German Embassy, the trip presented various opportunities for dialogue with experts and Chinese institutions. During a meeting with the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the delegation gained valuable insights into the current challenges and opportunities of Sino-German cooperation.
One of the highlights was a visit to the renowned Tsinghua University, where discussions centered on sharing expertise and exploring potential future partnerships. Conversations with experts there provided a deep look into China’s academic environment and valuable starting points for further collaboration.
A highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the one-day symposium at the China University of Political Science and Law. Eleven lectures covered topics such as export control, intellectual property, and scientific data transfer, offering essential insights into the legal framework of German-Chinese cooperation. Personal discussions with Chinese experts strengthened intercultural connections and laid the groundwork for future events and ongoing dialogue.
The trip concluded with a visit to the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, one of China’s fastest-growing research institutes. The impressive laboratories and innovative projects showcased there provided a glimpse into cutting-edge research in China. Opportunities for collaboration with German universities were also discussed, leading to intensive talks about future partnerships.
The cultural side of Beijing was also an integral part of the itinerary. Alongside the packed schedule, one day was set aside for the delegation to explore Beijing independently.
With countless insights and inspiring conversations in their luggage, the delegation finally boarded their flight back to Germany. The trip was a complete success, offering invaluable insights into research and diplomacy, along with unforgettable cultural experiences.
