Between High-Tech and Tradition – Insights into China’s Innovation System
ENTRANCE Fokusreise 2025
A journey to China is always something special, especially when it takes place in the spirit of science, innovation and international collaboration. In early September 2025, the third ENTRANCE Focus Trip took place, bringing together a delegation of 28 representatives from German universities and research institutions. Their destination was one of the most dynamic innovation hubs of our time: China.
The aim of the trip was to experience first-hand how research, technology and industry interconnect in China, and to explore the opportunities this offers for collaboration with German partners.
From the outset, in the metropolitan region of Shanghai/Suzhou, the group could sense the energy and pace with which China is shaping the future. A particular highlight was the visit to Taicang, home to more than 500 German companies and the largest German business community in China. The exchanges there vividly illustrated how German engineering expertise and Chinese innovative drive go hand in hand.
In Nanjing and Suzhou, the delegation gained fascinating insights into the close ties between science and industry. Visits to institutions such as the Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI) and the Global Advanced Manufacturing Institute (GAMI) demonstrated how consistently research in China is translated into market-ready solutions.
At Zhejiang University (ZJU) in Hangzhou, one of the country’s leading universities, participants experienced how international collaboration in research can be successfully implemented. The ZJU serves as a globally connected hub for technology and innovation, an inspiring example of how knowledge exchange can transcend borders.
The political dimension of innovation was also addressed: during discussions at the German Consulate General in Shanghai, conversations centred on the current framework for Sino-German cooperation in science and research.
Beyond the professional programme, the Focus Trip offered numerous cultural experiences. Historic sites such as the City Wall of Nanjing, Hui Shan Ancient Town, and the impressive Grand Buddha of Ling Shan provided powerful reminders that innovation and tradition are deeply intertwined in China.
The ENTRANCE Focus Trip 2025 not only opened up new perspectives but once again demonstrated how valuable personal exchange is for fostering international research and innovation.
