JARA – Jülich Aachen Research Alliance

Focusing Expertise - Shaping the Future
In the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA), RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich pool their outstanding expertise in five research sections, a JARA-Center and four

JARA-Instituts.These common efforts open up new research opportunities and facilitate projects that would not be attainable for either of the partners on their own. Furthermore, their attention is always focused on the grand challenges facing society.

Prof. Regina Palkovits (JARA-ENERGY) and Prof. Will van der Aalst (JARA-CSD) received great honour. The two experts were accepted into the class for engineering and economics at the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. A total of 15 scientists and artists were accepted as members of the Academy on May 6.

The regulatory sandbox "TransUrban.NRW" was launched on the first of May. The project is part of the regulatory sandboxes for energy transition, which were put out to tender by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy last year. Under the direction of E.ON Energy Solution GmbH, three JARA-ENERGY members are involved: Prof. Dirk Müller, Prof. Antonello Monti and Junior Professor Aaron Praktiknjo. The aim of the laboratory is to put energy system transformation innovations into practice.

A big question of science is why and where antimatter disappeared after the big bang. Numerous projects around the world are working to answer this question. The T2K experiment is also dedicated to the study of antimatter. Now, analysis of the data obtained during the experiment has revealed signs of differences between matter and antimatter. These differences could be a step towards unravelling the matter-antimatter asymmetry.

It is undisputed that energy from fossil fuels must be rapidly replaced by volatile, green energies. Above all, a phase-out of coal energy is necessary to achieve the climate targets. Nuclear energy has also been obsolete for a long time because of its unpredictability. A study by JARA-ENERGY member Prof. Aaron Praktiknjo now shows the effects of the nuclear and coal energy phase-out on the energy supply.
