The project Energy oriented Center of Excellence (EoCoE), pronounced “ECO”, is a European Union Horizon 2020 project funded within the call addressing “e-Infrastructures”. Its aim is to strengthen Europe’s existing leadership in high-performance computing (HPC) and accelerate the transition to a reliable and low carbon energy supply.
The Institute of Applied Geophysics and Geothermal Energy, headed by JARA-ENERGY member Prof. Christoph Clauser, is associated with the work package “Water4Energy” and provides knowledge in the field of geothermal energy. A highly resolved, three-dimensional heat and fluid flow model of the subsurface of a part of the Lower Rhine Embayment around the city Geilenkirchen will be set up. The in-house code SHEMAT-Suite, which is parallelized and designed to handle large models and stochastic reservoir properties, will be used for numerical simulations. The natural groundwater flow and heat transport with its associated uncertainty will be studied, based on the stochastic variations of reservoir rock properties.
The subsequent task is to provide an optimized configuration of geothermal installations for a city quarter of Geilenkirchen. As a basis, the realistic demand for heating and cooling of the newly planned city quarter Geilenkirchen-Neuteveren is used. Different layouts of the geothermal installations and scenarios for the energy use will provide a case study for the use of geothermal energy for city quarters. This study may serve as a blueprint for regions with similar geological, hydrological and geothermal conditions and provides guidelines how geothermal energy may be incorporated in the future energy mix.
This project is funded from 01.10.2015 until 30.09.2018 in the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program.
