Clinician Scientist

The combination of clinical tasks and research is the basis for the successful transfer of research results into the everyday clinical practice. The Clinician Scientist concept combines independent clinical work with the freedom for self-reliant scientific work. In the JARA context, the focus lies on mental and/or neurological diseases.

The JARA junior professorships of the BRAIN section are dedicated to the activities of the Clinician Scientists. After their residency, excellent young scientists have the opportunity to combine clinical work at the University Hospital Aachen with scientific work, especially at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

There is no structured Clinician Scientist program available. Instead, the researcher himself is given the opportunity to sharpen his clinical and scientific profile according to his own priorities. However, the medical faculty of RWTH Aachen University recently initiated a structured Clinician Scientist program, extending the opportunities of JARA-BRAIN clinician scientists to other medical disciplines.

Currently three JARA-BRAIN junior professors are working as "Clinician Scientists" at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen and at the Research Centre Jülich:

  • Jun.-Prof. Dr. med. Björn Falkenburger, Klinik für Neurologie, Uniklinik RWTH Aachen
  • Jun.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Martin Schulte-Rüther, Klinik für Psychiatrie, Psychosomatik und Psychotherapie des Kindes- und Jugendalters, Uniklinik RWTH Aachen
  • Jun.-Prof. Dr. med. Danilo Bzdok (seit 1. September 2015), Klinik für Psychiatrie, Psychotherapie und Psychosomatik, Sektion Neuropsychologische Geschlechterforschung, Uniklinik RWTH Aachen
